Personal Statement
I have been blessed for over twenty years by literally thousands of students as I have had the ultimate privilege of teaching them about art and individual expression. Many say teachers have an incredible impact on their students and, as I whole heartedly agree, I must say my perspective on art, expression, and life has been greatly affected by kids! My students impact my every day with the amazing strength and positive attitude they seem to so naturally possess. The excitement my students display with learning makes every day and every project a new journey for me. Their pure ability to forgive, accept, and love also encourages me. The simple forgiving nature of a child is somewhat similar to the forgiving possibilities of a digital photograph, a brush stroke on an acrylic painting, or an eraser on a pencil drawing. All of these assist me in my own individual expression!
While drawing, painting, and photographing for others has driven my personal art over my life, my amazing family and incredible students has led me to challenge myself in other forms of expression as well. Through various art media, I teach my students life-long skills which will assist them in any career they chose as well as a creative outlet to express themselves. The viewer of my work can look into my heart and mind as each piece reveals something about my life; something I also pull from my students as they create. Although most of my experience has been in photography, acrylics, and pencil, I enjoy pushing myself to learn more and the creative expressions I can gain and in turn, share with my students.
I am a busy wife and mother of three incredible kids! I just completed my 23rd year of teaching art in the public schools. It doesn’t seem like I’ve been teaching that long, but I look forward to preparing for yet another new year each August! Raising three kids, maintaining a full time teaching career, and living in a small, rural community has made pursuing a master degree in art education very challenging. Now that my children are older and online courses are available, I believe it is time for me to tackle this personal goal in order to become the best I can be as an educator. I don’t ever want to become one of those teachers who becomes “stuck” in her ways and “burned out”. Instead, I want to be the most up-to-date in my field and challenge myself as I continually push my students. Pursuing my master’s degree through the prestigious, well-respected program at the University of Florida is very exciting for me. The online courses will allow me to continue teaching, be a wife and mother, and pursue my personal goal of being the best educator I can be for my students as well.
I have a passion for teaching as I have educated students in the area of art from elementary age to adult over the past 23 years with most of my experience being at the middle school level in public school. I am committed to everything I begin. I have been married to the same wonderful man for 23 years, have taught in only two different districts, and returned to the community in which I was raised. Within this small community, I am involved in my church, adult education, child advocacy networks, various publications, coaching, art judging, various art committees and prevention resources for the youth in our town. Within my district, I belong to a variety of professional organizations, coordinate art and journalism clubs, judge contests, write grant proposals, provide my students the opportunity to be published artists on Artsonia.com and accept extra responsibilities when needed. I have proven to be dependable and hardworking as I am thankful for the recognition and awards over the years. I’m driven to make a difference!
